SOCIAL: CORPORATION DIVERSITY
Corporations are considered legal entities. They are like individuals from the perspective of the government. If they are individuals, why then does society keep pushing the same types of corporations with the same types of values? I think this is a problem. Corporations, in their attempt to appeal to the widest demographic, have become so similar to one another. The only thing that distinguishes them from another is what they produce. The issue I have here is that they appeal to the expectations of social and political correctness. We are producing a capitalist system wherein there is a lack of diversity. Various social cleavages are being ignored and its time that they too get the representation that they deserve. We need to speak up for these people that are not getting represented. If one person says something in a corporation and it is disfavored by the public, he or she shouldn’t be condemned for it. People and corporations have to stand up and protect diversity. An example is H&M. When a t shirt was the subject of controversy. Clearly the company didn’t mean to be racist however, the point here is that people are blindly conforming to this ideal of political correctness which then will evidently result in censorship. Another example is Chik-Fil-A and their disdain towards the LGBTQ preferences. People once again rallied to boycott them. This has to stop. We need to work on creating a macroscopic environments which supports the diversity of our nation. We here in North America are composed of immigrants with different backgrounds. These give us the varied values and beliefs that we hold dear. Why is it then are we trying to push and censor these entities. From the left perspective it is for civility. But, is this, “civility,” causing a lack of equity? People that have alternate beliefs and values should also be able to say and do what they want. They shouldn’t be deprived of this through the homogenous values of corporations. Corporations really need to reflect on their mission. They really need to see who they really represent and what is important to those people. We need to start creating a diverse corporate macroscopic environment. There should be no reason that a corporation shouldn’t be able to support certain social cleavages. We need to be mindful that our strength is in our diversity, our environment should thus reflect this.
